Crested Butte's Non-Motorized Options

You're planning on visiting Crested Butte to ride, but like a lot of dirt bikers out there, you aren't one-sport specific. You enjoy hiking, bicycling, climbing, rafting and getting away from it all. You don't have the luxury of having seperate vacations for each pleasure, but by choosing Crested Butte as your destination, you can have it all.

Mountain Biking
The kind of trails that make CB a great place to dirt bike also make it a world-class place to mountain bike. There's no better way to get a quick work-out in and see some great back country than pedalling the CB trails. Trails like "The Dyke," #401, Deer Creek and others are great options for exploring trails that are specifically for non-motorized two-wheelers. For more information, check back here to be linked to the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association's web site. It's currently under construction, but should be up and running soon.

Fishing
Regardless of your fishing tastes, the Gunnison Basin has something for you! Fly fishing, trolling, deep-water stuff--it's here! Between Taylor and Blue Mesa Reservoirs, the incredible local trout streams, the opportunities are abundant! Check back here for links to outfits that will help you get set to catch a lunker!

Cool Off
Crested Butte summers aren't usually too bad temperature wise, but the sun can pound and generate hot days. As a cure, why not check out one of the river rafting companies around the area? Outfits stage out of both Gunnison and Almont, offering a variety of float and whitewater trips. Blue Mesa Reservoir, five miles west of Gunnison, offers great opportunities for swimming and waterskiing. This high-elevation reservior is the largest in Colorado, but warms up to refreshing swimming temps in July and August

Explore the Wilderness
Gunnison County is home to more than 343,000 acres of wilderness! What many people fail to realize is that while there is a fair amount of country accessed by motorcycle and mountain bike trails in the area, getting away from the masses in Crested Butte is often just a stroll away. If you need a day or a multi-day excursion to get away from civilization, this is the place! For more information, check out the USFS page.
