Travel Management Process, continued...

Weighing In . . . How You Will Defend Your Right to Ride

The FS & BLM presented two maps to attendees, one map showing current conditions with Crested Butte and Gunnison roads, 4x4 roads and single track trails, and another map showing what the FS/BLM felt was a likely scenario with routes once travel management on the Gunnison was complete. These maps are currently available at

  • Sun Sports, Gunnison
  • SJHM Industries, Gunnison
  • Sky High Off road, Crested Butte
  • CBTRA web-site (when files are made available by the FS).
  • FS/BLM Offices

The Legwork

The "homework" for each user group will be to take these maps back to their group members, look them over, and decide if there are routes on the map that should or should not be open. If there are routes that are not on the map that you feel should be open, you will fill out a "proposed change" sheet (we should have those for you on the CBTRA web site, as well), explaining why you think the route should be open. Explaining that the route gets to an important destination or that the route is a destination in itself is the kind of argument that you would want to make. You can also suggest new routes to make loops out of existing routes, but you must make a very compelling case for your suggestion.

Keep in mind of course, that the Anti crowd will be filling out "proposed change" sheets to close routes that the FS/BLM feels will likely be open when the travel management process is complete.

The FS acknowledges that there are probably mistakes on the maps that they've created. If you see mistakes, bring it to the Forest Service Staff's attention.

The Forest Service will take the "proposed change" forms into the fall and then work on the travel management plan over the winter. In the spring of '07, they will present what they've come up with, take public comments, massage the plan as per the comments and then re-present the plan.
