Hi Folks--Gunnison National Forest and Gunnison BLM Travel Management is here. For the Forest Services complete overview of the travel management process, please click here to be taken to their site. If you care to visit the Gunnison BLM site (at the time of this publication, they didn't appear to have anything relevant to Gunnison Travel Management posted), check out the link at the bottom of the page.
The comment period regarding which trails should remain open and which should close has already begun. If word of this doesn't have you grabbing your trail map, sharpening your pencil and calling all of your buddies to do the same, click here to find out why it should.
Here's the route-by-route comment process and it's pretty straight forward:
- Grab a current Forest Service Map and either an up-to-date Latitude 40 or National Geographic map of the Gunnison.
- Print out as many copies of the Forest Service Route Change Comment forms as you need.
- Fill out a sheet for each trail that you would like to see remain on the "legal" list for motorized use, explaining in concise, constructive language why the route should remain open. For more on what to include in your comments, click here. For a list of trails and suggested comments, click here.
- Return the sheet to the Forest Service by October 15th.
The Forest Service will put together Travel Management alternatives and publish them in April (that's by their time line, and those tend to be quite optimistic) and make a decision on which alternative to use, again based at least in part on public comments. Check back to this site in the spring of 2007 to comment on the different travel management options the Forest Service generates based on public input.
